Journal of Arnold Bennett. Thursday, 13 May 1915.
Lunch yesterday with Wells and Gardiner at Automobile Club [Pall Mall]. Wells said he knew that French (Sir J.) believed the war would be over in June. Afterwards with H.G. to Royal Academy. I had no use for Sargents, Orpens, or Clausens. A fairish crowd there. Then to tea with him at Carlyle Club [211 Piccadilly].
Did Wells have more “use”? Bennett may have been put off by Renaissance, but there were some fine Clausens in the 1915 exhibition, including The Valley and Winter Morning: Interior.
Winter Morning shows Meg or Kit at the breakfast table at Carlton Hill.
